Finding my workout Rhythm
In primary school, I was the tall, skinny tomboy, but boy did I hate sports. Whenever sports day would come around, I would be sick to my stomach. weirdly, everyone would assume I played basketball but because I was lazy, I preferred to watch it instead.
Eventually, as I got to college in South Africa, I decided to try out for the school team but the warm-ups alone were keeping me out of breath, so a week later I quit.
Fast forward to 2011, after the South African world cup, with all the bad eating and drinking we did, I decided to try out this fitness thing again, this time no basketball, I joined a gym, Virgin Active! I have a love-hate relationship with busy gyms because a lot of people go there for the wrong reasons. I would be on the treadmill with my earphones and feel someone tap me, only for me to take out my earphones and it is a guy trying to chat me up! I quickly thought, that maybe I should wear the ugliest clothes to the gym, but this didn’t work either. I slowly then learnt to just brush them off and focus on my workouts.
My first 3yrs of working out didn’t have much progress because I would take long breaks, I didn’t know much about what I was doing, my bad habits overpowered the good habits!
Eventually, when Emmanuel and I started working out together, we taught each other a lot, he encouraged me to lift weights and I encouraged him to do cardio. we tried out different gyms, did CrossFit, boxing and even decided to do fitness courses together. Currently, we both have certificates in Personal training and Sports Science.
What started as a side hustle, then became a full-time career. And at 35, I’m the fittest I have ever been!
