Inside Electro-Maxx: How Uganda's First African-Founded Independent Power Producer Works
When Electro-Maxx Uganda Ltd launched in 2005, it marked a turning point for the country's energy sector. At a time when independent power production above 20MW was dominated by foreign-backed developers, Simba Group became the first African-founded company to build and operate a plant of that scale.
A Plant Built for Reliability
The Tororo facility generates over 50MW of thermal power, feeding directly into Uganda's national grid. For industries, schools, and communities in the region, that has meant fewer disruptions and a more dependable power supply during a period when demand was consistently outpacing capacity.
Why African-Led Energy Matters
Independent power production is capital-intensive and technically demanding, which is why so much of it has historically been financed and operated from outside the continent. Electro-Maxx's model proved that an African company could deliver at the same standard, while keeping decision-making, jobs, and expertise rooted locally.
Looking to Renewables
Electro-Maxx is now exploring renewable and hybrid energy solutions as part of its next phase, aligning with Simba Group's broader commitment to Africa's green energy transition. The plant remains a reminder that energy security and local ownership are not mutually exclusive, they can, and should, go hand in hand.
