From a Single Kiosk to a Multi-Sector Powerhouse: The Simba Telecom Origin Story
Every large company has an origin story, but few are as improbable as Simba Group's. In 1998, Patrick and Carol Bitature opened a single retail shop in Kampala and signed an exclusive partnership with MTN Uganda, a network that had itself only just launched.
Six Months, More Customers Than Competitors Had in Four Years
Simba Telecom's early growth was so rapid that within six months of opening, the company had signed up more Ugandans to MTN than competing dealers had managed in four years. That momentum turned a single shop into a retail network, and a retail network into the seed of a much larger group.
Beyond Airtime
From the outset, the business was about more than selling SIM cards and airtime. It was about giving ordinary Ugandans practical tools to connect with family, run businesses, and participate in a fast-changing economy. By 2010, Simba Telecom's gross sales had passed US$80 million, making it the largest seller of MTN airtime in the country.
The Seed of Simba Group
That original shop is the reason Simba Group exists today. The discipline, distribution networks, and customer trust built in those early years became the foundation for every subsequent venture, from hospitality to energy to agriculture.
